The saying “good things come to those who wait” could have been written for the homeowners of this iconic 1952 original art deco home.
It was during a short visit home to WA while the couple were working and living in Azerbaijan, that Jill Fowler was fortunate enough one morning to spot a for sale sign being erected in the front yard. A quick discussion with the real estate agent followed by a consultation with her husband lead to the couple making an offer to purchase the home that evening.
“We have lived in the area for more than 30 years and I particularly loved this home” said Jill.
Most mornings I would walk past this home and admire the art deco design, wishing that one day we might be lucky enough to live here – I just never expected it to happen when it did.”
The home which sits on 913sqm of land was one of two homes built by the Pool brothers; local fishermen whose family had also been long-time residents in the area. Jill believes one of the reasons why their offer was accepted by the Pool family was that she loved and appreciated the home’s iconic features and had no intention of demolishing it.
It was three years after their purchase that Jill began the process of planning a significant second storey extension. Having previously never undertaken such a large home improvement Jill was keen to take her time to ensure she found the right building company who had the expertise to carry the art deco design through to a second storey without making it look like an obvious addition.
“When I met with Jim Belton the Design Consultant from Summit Home Improvements I just felt as though he understood how important this home was to me and he knew that attention to design detail was critical” said Jill.
“He was very patient” she laughs, adding that over a four year period she put the project on hold several times before giving Jim the go ahead.
“Jim was really good about it. Even though I put the project on hold once for 12 months, when I did call him to say I was ready to start we just picked up from where we had left off; it was very easy to work with him and the whole team.”
Jill undertook plenty of research, gathering images of other iconic art deco properties around Perth and was clear on her brief to Summit Home Improvements; the second storey façade needed to reflect the original design of the home, with a focus on maximising the views from all angles.
“While our views from downstairs were already very good, we knew if we went up-stairs we would have an even better view, so we decided to literally move ourselves permanently upstairs so that day and night we could enjoy the sights” said Jill.
The result is a modern, stylish second storey which offers almost 200 degree uninterrupted views; Garden, Carnac and Rottnest Island are all in clear view, as is the Fremantle Ferris Wheel which can been seen lit up at night.
The second storey includes a new modern kitchen, living and dining area with two balconies; one large enough to entertain and a smaller balcony off the kitchen. In addition a new master bedroom with ensuite and walk in robes was added along with a study. As the owners move towards retirement, they were adamant of their intent to remain in the home for as long as possible, it was therefore recommended they incorporate a lift shaft into the design so that at a later date they can install an elevator.
“This was a really good idea which we are pleased we included” said Jill.
“The door to the elevator is discretely hidden both on the ground and second floor and it means we can continue to enjoy our home for many years to come.”
Asked where her favourite spot in the home is and Jill struggles to choose just one.
“I love the kitchen and the small balcony which sits off the kitchen, it overlooks the garden as this is my favourite place to sit and enjoy a quiet cup of tea. Though, I also love the bedroom because we wake up every morning to these magnificent views.”
It’s obvious this is a home which has been in the planning for many years. The tasteful interiors throughout are in keeping with the original design and the quality antique furnishings all point to a home which is warmly loved and has been enjoyed for many years.
“I am over the moon with what Summit Home Improvements have done” said Jill.
“Their workmanship has been of the highest quality and the whole team were very easy to work with, I couldn’t be happier.”Go back
